Dollar Store Savings

By Haylee Landford

Seeing as I don't happen to live anywhere close to what you would call a metropolis, boredom often provokes me to search for something exciting to do. Also, the economy's decline has sent us as a family into the need of a stricter budget. Taking a trip to the local dollar store can supply you with whatever you are looking for by necessity or saving money, or the fun to looking for things to do.

I went with the hopes of saving money, and was quite excited to find that many of the items I had been purchasing at other stores for a bit more money, was in stock for only a dollar! I know since I've lived in Arizona, Oregon, Texas, California, and Utah, that the dollar store isn't even very far away. I can't wait to tell you what I found so that we all can keep some extra bucks in our pocket this year.

My ten month old son and I were most surprised to find how much they had in store for him. I was so excited to see how many baby items they had. With all the little essentials a small person requires, I have saved quite a bit a money.

For example, I found sippy cups, small spoons, bowls, and bibs for his eating needs. They also had onesies, wash cloths, and socks. All these items can add up to a large expense, so for one dollar a piece, it's well worth it to come to the dollar store for them instead.

Besides my baby, my next favorite thing to do is cook. I can't quite tell if I find more enjoyment in cooking a great dish, or eating it. But either way, it's difficult to find enjoyment in cooking if you are lacking the appropriate tools. Cutting back so much in this economy, I have sadly found myself doing without quite a few essential cooking utensils at times.

Here at the dollar store, the wall was filled with every possible contraption for use in the kitchen imaginable. I finally have my zester, a grater, basting brush, whisks, spatulas, and mashers. My spoon drawer is now filled with a spoon for stirring, serving, ladeling, straining, and even eating soups. Don't worry about expensive knives, because they can supply you with what you need for paring, steaks, butchering, dicing, and slicing. Your culinary masterpiece is no longer just in your imagination.

I also found a stock supply of cling wrap, aluminum foil, casserole dishes, and bowls for storing your food. Then to set your perfect table there is cloth napkins, place mats, table cloths and even matching plates, bowls, and cups that aren't disposable. They come in sturdy material of plastic or glass and in a variety of colors and designs that would surprise you.

I also find myself unable to bear skimping on cleaning in my home, so the dollar store comes complete with a fully stocked cleaning aisle. I found everything I needed for my kitchen cleaners, bathroom disinfectants, window cleaners, and even easy and useful wipes for all surfaces. Whether you need dusting, mopping, sweeping, or sanitizing, the supplies to help you are here.

Please don't forget these items all come at one measly dollar each. In comparison with what they would cost even at the most discounted of department stores, you'll save so much money it will astound you. Don't overlook the frugality of shopping at your local dollar store. Just wait and see what treasures you will find there. - 24585
