Sneaky Snakes

Snakes. Just the mention of the word can send chills up the spine or send one fleeing in the opposite direction. To some they are just scary, slithery, sinister serpents. However, they are also sneaky. Yes, sneaky. The serpent has been known for its sneakiness since the beginning. Remember Eve? It was because of the sneaky sales pitch of the serpent that Eve "bought", Adam "bit" , and they were both "booted out" of the Garden of Eden. Oh yes, snakes can be extremely sneaky, and can show their craftiness in a variety of ways.

The American Copperhead is a great example of a cunning culprit. This snake has a rust and copper colored body with dark crisscrossing bands. It has a bright copper colored head, hence the name, Copperhead. This snake is easily recognizable, that is if you see it. Because of the snake's markings, they are easily hidden. Let this snake curl up on a pile of fallen leaves and you may never even know it was there. Pretty slick huh? But that's not all. These snakes learn how to be masters of guile at a very early age, as a matter of fact from the moment they are born. The baby Copperhead is born with a yellow tipped tail which it uses to lure unsuspecting prey. The juvenile snake hides beneath the leaves and sticks its wiggling tail up. The tail, resembling a grubworm, attracts moles, mice, and other such rodents. When the small mixed-up mammals take the bait, the clever Copperhead enjoys his dinner.

Besides being deceitful for dinner, snakes also use their misleading mannerisms to protect themselves. The colorful yet, allusive Coral Snake, for instance, will curl up and hide its head underneath its body when it feels threatened. Then it bends and presents its tail in such a way that it looks just like the snake's head. When a predator attempts to attack, the snake bites back injecting neurotoxic venom paralyzing its victim. The predator in this case sometimes becomes the prey.

Just as the Coral Snake has an ingenious way of protecting itself, so does the Coral Snake Copy Cat, the Scarlet Kingsnake. This snake uses its looks to confound and confuse. The nonvenomous Scarlet Kingsnake very much resembles the very venomous Coral Snake. The kingsnake has the same colors of red, black, and yellow. The difference, however, is in the pattern. The old rhyme "Red meets yellow, Kill a fellow, Red meets black, Friend of Jack", helps us to aptly identify the snake, but thoroughly mixes up would be predators and sometimes helps prevent this "legless lizard" from becoming lunch.

Yes, snakes are still as sneaky as ever. They still bewilder, beguile, and sometimes even bewitch. They are masters of disguise as well as masters of deception and they probably always will be. Birding Binoculars - Which are Best?

Will the bird binoculars you choose work well with eyeglasses? Some are better than others for eye relief and eyeglasses. With good binoculars you sometimes feel like you are looking with your own eyes only the view is closer, magnified and clear. You hardly notice the weight in your hands while you are watching some curious little warbler in the brush. How big do you want that image to be? Well, that will depend on many things. How heavy will the binoculars be with extra magnification? Can you hold the binoculars steady if they are magnified more than 10 times (10x)? I find it hard to hold 12x steady for any length of time without support. But I have small hands and that makes a difference too.

So tell me, how much of the area can you see around the bird? That is your field of view. Field of view refers to how much you will see through the binoculars in relation to a fixed distance from the object you are observing. It will be helpful to have a wider field of view to be able to find small birds in the brush and across wide expanses of ocean or desert terrain. In addition to weight and magnification and comfort in the field, you want to keep in mind how much you can see. What is the field of view for those binoculars?

Bulky binoculars are harder to handle. Your hands will tremble while you are viewing the object. You may need a tripod stand to view birds without shaking with a bigger objective lens. You should select your own binoculars, especially if you have any vision impairments.

Let's clear up what those numbers mean. If your binoculars are labeled 10x42, it means you will be seeing things magnified ten times. The first number is the magnification, 10x. The size of the objective lens is described in millimeters in the second number. So in this case the diameter of the lens at the other end of the eyepiece is 42mm wide. A larger diameter lens is not only heavier, but it lets in more light and you can see things more clearly in less light than with a smaller lens.

The very next most important characteristic for me is whether the binoculars are waterproof binoculars and durable and sturdy. Or when they are dropped from the edge of an overlook onto the rocks below? Of course, if you wear your strap around your neck all the time they are less likely to fall, but, just in case, are they sturdy? I have lost a lot of lens covers at overlooks. I also prefer compact binoculars.

If you choose the best binoculars that fit you that also fit your budget and you will be a happy birdwatcher and even have some cash in your pocket for lunch, maybe. Just relax and look around. The binoculars you buy are intended to enhance your field trips or birding expeditions, so don't stress out over them. Take your time and read some reviews. Every manufacturer has a website full of detailed information and there are plenty of reviews online for you to compare while you are still looking.

I have found Leupold binoculars 10x32 are a nice compromise size for me. They are a little larger than my compact Bushnell Binoculars at 8x25 that I carry with me wherever I go, just in case I see interesting birds, butterflies or flowers in the field. I know I have a fine pair of excellent quality binoculars that are waterproof, fog proof and guaranteed for life.

To tell the just plain truth, when your binoculars feel like an extension of your hands and you can see clearly and well, you have just found your best pair. Remember to stay within your budget and check on the field of vision and depth of field while you are looking. That is what it takes when you get right down to the details. - 24585

Remembering Old Shea Stadium

As sad as it is, it's time to say goodbye to the old Shea Stadium after 44 years of sports memories for all of us. It hardly seems possible that the Mets were an expansion team all these years after their cross-town American League rivals first took the field. It's also hard to remember the stadium being called the Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium, but that's what it called until a movement was launched to name it in honor of William Shea.

Over the years, Shea Stadium housed some of the greatness baseball players ever to walk on the field. Names like Duke Snider, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Richie Ashburn, and Gary Carter who all became Hall of Famers. Then we can't forget the entertaining players that just gritted it out everyday like Lenny "Nails" Dykstra and Gil Hodges.

Yes, there have been lots of good times and a few bad times; we've been confronted with ugly and outrageous behavior of players and fans, but in the end we have some awesome memories woven into the fabric of the stadium's history. Take the 1986 Mets versus Boston Red Sox World Series game, for example, where we watched Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry take the Mets to a victorious climax, winning the World Series that year. Regrettably, the notoriety and high living took its toll as both players spent the remaining years of their baseball careers dealing with the consequences of drug use and other problems.

In 1969 we saw the Amazin' Mets win their first Championship when no one really knew of the young Nolan Ryan who would spend the next 27 years earning the record of the player who struck out 5,714 batters. Remarkable moments like these abound throughout the history of Shea Stadium; in fact, one could literally write a book about the colorful and extraordinary events. And although a new chapter in the stadium's history begins, those special memories of the past will live in the hearts of Mets' fans around the world for eternity.

When the world was stunned by the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Shea Stadium became a relief center for supplies, food, and a place for the victims to stay. Who can forget the first game after that fateful day when the Mets helped to heal the city? For New Yorkers, it was one of the most inspiring nights ever in baseball history. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to watch as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Before the game started the rescue workers were honored and Diana Ross sang God Bless America. It was a very moving experience as the two teams shook hands, united in the face of the tragedy that shook the world. Yes, our Shea Stadium is like no other. May we always remember and look with anticipation to 50 more years of baseball history. - 24585

College vs. Professional Sports - Which Do You Prefer?

There is a debate among sports fans which is as old as professional sports: whether collegiate athletics or professional sports are superior to the other. Fans on either side of the issue are adamant in their devotion to one or the other, but many fans prefer college athletics for one sport and professional for the other. The sports which are the subject of the most debate here are basketball and football and while this is an argument which will never be settled; it's one that fans will also continue to have for as long as professional and collegiate sports are played.

Collegiate basketball has an amazing thing working in its advantage, the March Madness tournament. It's a fantastic time of the year when anything is possible. Teams that are outmatched and unheard of can get it together for one night and beat an established power. Dozens and dozens of games are held in a short amount of time, meaning there is jam packed action. There is of course ample room for betting, which adds to people's interest in the event.

Proponents of college basketball also mention how it is more pure. Some players have pro aspirations, sure, but most are just college athletes who have already maxed out their potential. Therefore they are playing because they love the game, not just for money or prestige. Their passion is easily seen, as is the passion of the fans of each and every team. A loyalty to college teams exists in stronger fashion than for many pro teams.

On the other side of the equation, fans of pro basketball will argue that while that is great, the NBA is better. The quality of competition is much better and the basketball played is better. The athletes are more supreme and gifted, and it's the best of the best. There are no weak links in the NBA, and the top players and teams don't get to walk over weaker competition that doesn't belong.

The seven game series which make up the NBA playoffs are pointed to by fans as a way of guaranteeing that the best team will emerge victorious. While it's hard to claim that the NBA playoffs offer more excitement than March Madness, they also make the point that regular season games are more compelling events.

When college vs. NBA football is the subject, the playoffs are invariably the center of discussion. NBA fans will make the argument that the college Bowl series uses a deeply flawed system where the teams aren't actually able to prove themselves in competition. The course of the college football playoffs are largely determined by computer analysis and voting rather than the direct competition of the NFL playoffs. Unless they are ranked number one or two by this odd system, even the best college team has no chance of making it to a Bowl game.

Fans of college football make the counterargument that the structure of the Bowl games series makes the regular college season incredibly exciting, since a team can lose its shot at the championship with just one lost game. Since there is a lot riding on the outcome of each and every game, fans remain engaged an excited throughout the entire regular season.

Each side in this long running debate is unlikely to change any minds on the other side and this is one place where fans simply have to agree to disagree - though many fans find a lot of enjoyment in the discussion itself. What it really comes down to is something that the fans already know: they don't have to choose one or the other and there's nothing stopping them from enjoying all of the excitement that collegiate and professional sports have to offer. - 24585
