The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce started and pushed through these lists of festivities way back when it started during 1983. The main man behind the idea of the balloon festival was a certain Mr. Walt Darren, a commercial airline pilot who had a side hobby of being a professional hot air balloonist. He was the first to have started the idea of having hot air balloons race through the countryside as part of an effort to jump start the ecological tourism in the area.

Vicky Taylor, then president of the Commerce had asked Evelyn Harker, event organizer to raise funds for this idea (of which she might have thought of it to be a pretty good idea in itself.) The event organizer had a splendid idea that the whole thing could pull off much more successfully if the other attractions that could be found in the local area were pulled in as a culmination of all the good things that can be found inside Temecula Valley. Things like wines, cheeses, the entertainment and basically, the cuisine of Temecula itself.

The idea was passed on, and more of the people around, as well as several establishments and organizations pitched their support in to try and bolster the event upwards. Funds came in steadily from different areas of the valley, not to mention these were limited to not only finance, but also through volunteer work and free advertising of the event.

The first event launched successfully, spring of 1984. With the small town of only 9000, this event was a big step for the commercialization and the growth of the local community. At least half of the town's population had arrived (increasing the head count of the area by up to 150% during that time).

Thirty five balloons that carried the dreams and aspirations of the locals sped through the lonely skies painted orange by the setting sun. This lacing is suitable for even-numbered eyelet pairs, but workarounds can be done for odd number of pairs.

Since the lacing was done in an inside-out manner, this technique can be messy to look at. As a variation, hikers can start on the outside of the eyelet, so that the vertical run of the lace is hidden inside the shoe. Other techniques can be done but as a rule of thumb, lacing should distribute pressure and keep the shoe firm.

Last tip is locking the lace of hiking shoes. Lock lacing is promoted by shoe stores because it prevents slips and shoe twisting because of stress. One locking technique is known as the high lock, where the shoe is laced to the top part of the shoe except for the last eyelet pair. Then, the ends are run straight to the unoccupied eyelet, and its run should form a vertical line on the outside. It will be crossed over so that it will be tucked under the run on the other side. Though it keeps the lace firm and reduces slip, this lock can be difficult to loosen. - 24585

United Kingdom: In the UK, stag weekends are becoming almost commonplace. The expected night-time-knees-up is of course still there, but the day is usually filled with activities of some description as well. With cheap airlines on the rise, its becoming more and more common for stag parties to be seen wandering around the streets of Majorca or Ibiza, although the most popular destinations are Dublin, Riga and Krakow, closely followed by Amsterdam.

USA: The term stag party is rarely used in the US, it is known as a bachelor party, and these bachelor parties usually consist of the same kind of activities that the British ones do, however their bachelor parties are more to symbolise the grooms last days of freedom from the bonds of wedlock rather than celebrating the fact that hes getting married. It kind of feels like most are so busy nowadays that it's hard to stay in touch. That's why I jump at the possibility to see family who are passing through town on travel, business or merely to see me! Even though houses are bigger than ever, these days, not everyone has space for a dedicated "guest room" with a bed. Many people use all the space they have available for children's bedrooms, hobby/craft rooms, a home office or den, or maybe just storage. When your visitors come, it can be hard to establish where they can stay and be comfortable. One idea is to have the youngsters double-up - they can "camp out" in each other's rooms on an Aerobed mattress on the floor. Then, your visitors can sleep in a child's room on his bed.

Some, I found, actually make a very big difference that could shift the whole paradigm out of focus. But the other tips, they area godsend to keeping your customer attention, reinforcing them and fortifying your reputation.

First thing to do is after finishing a deal. Keep your customer's contact details and few days after, send a personal, hand-written note thanking them for their business and hoping to do more in the future. A thank you note makes the whole thing personal, making it appealing and at the same time, reminding the customer that you actually care. Just make sure to write your note as short as possible, no flattery, and unscripted. Let the customer feel. Bee as genuine about your happiness for doing business with the person.

Another great tip while inside the art fair: make sure to never leave your post unsupervised. That means to not ever, leave your post. You. Not some other person. It should be you. There are many families of marine fish, Blenniidae, Gobiidae, labroids, Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, Acanthuridae and much more. For example, Yellow tang is a hardy species that can tolerate some newly fish keeper's mistakes.

The yellow tang known also as Zebrasoma flavescens. It is one of the most sought after, popular marine fish all over the globe. The Yellow Tang is a very hardy fish that is not territorial except with any other flavescens tangs especially from the genus Zebrasoma. it is highly aggressive conspecific species. The yellow tang has very sharp white colored barbs around the tail area, these barbs used as a weapon, it can inject poison. It's beautiful yellow color along with its temperament and the fact that it is less prone to diseases than other Tangs Makes the yellow tang a very common and sought after marine fish in reefs and marine tanks. Like its entire genus the Zebrasoma Flavescens is herbivore . In nature, the yellow tang feeds on micro and macro algae. In captivity they should get "green" food, lettuce, nori algae with flakes and pellet food all can complete their diet. frozen foods can be added from time to time. Requires 70 gallon tank and up with a lot of hiding places,live rocks and plenty of room to swim. Strong aeration and well filtered water are essential.

Another common marine fish is the tomato clown fish. The Tomato Clownfish is also known by its scientific name Amphiprion frenatus. Tomato Clownfish is one of 27 known Clownfish species in nature. Tomato clownfish is known to inhabit lagoon reefs, the female of this species is larger and rounded then the male, once in an established pair, the female gets darker then the male whom keeps its beautiful red orange color. The Tomato Clown fish prefer the Entacmaea quadricolor, Carpet Anemone or Heteractis crispa as a host anemone but also does fine without a host anemone. Sometimes these clownfish adopts corals such as Euphyllia species as a host. As with all clownfish, most are born as males, and the dominant male will be changed to a female. When it comes time to finish your project you need to know that for wood treatments it is either stain, paints or finish. They are each providing a different outcome. To tint the wood you would use wood stains. Paints sit on the wood and protect it. Some finishes are pretty much paint without any color added to it. They are the ones that give that clear protection.

Probably one of the most well known finishes is varnish. It?s a great finish because the more layers you use the stronger the finish. The major problem with varnish is it dries slowly which increases the chance for dust to get into the finish. If possible, try to do your finishing work in an area where there is the least amount of dust.

A mixture of resins and synthetics boiled together is what makes varnish. If you are using polyurethane?s then you are simply using a varnish that has had a polyurethane resin added to it. When you are using a varnish that contains a higher quantity of oil, it makes the product more flexible and this is known as Spar varnish, which makes it perfect for outdoor use because of it flexing properties.

If you are going to use varnish as your finishing product then you need to know how to apply it properly. Working in a dust free room is a priority. Then using a tack cloth wipe down your project as it must be perfectly clean. Put some of your varnish into a container that you can work out of .That way if it becomes contaminated with dust you can just discard that amount. Apply the varnish using long steady strokes with a brush working in the grain direction. Tip off your brush strokes. Wed sand in between coats with fine sandpaper.

There is also wiping varnish but read the labels carefully before using this product to be sure that it is varnish and not tung oil.

Then there are oil and varnish blends. They work similar to an oil finish but have a bit more protection to them but they are not for building layers.

Shellac is a natural resin but not is as durable as the others are. It?s not good for items such as kitchen counter or cabinets for example. It is a fast drying product though and you can get it in various colors.

Lacquer is usually applied with a spray gun but the fumes can be dangerous and the dry dust is explosive.

There are some really good what are labeled as water based finishes but they all have a certain amount of solvent in them. Their two weaknesses is they show brush marks and they bubble when you are applying them so use a synthetic brush for this.

Proper sanding between coats of your finish is one of your most important steps. Be sure to use fine sandpaper. The sanding removes bumps and uneven spots. Especially made sandpaper for wet sanding is ideal. Really, take the time to research the various finishes you are going to use to get the best application and intended use from them. - 24585

If you have a large family, this is especially important, as a typical hotel room is not usually large enough. Many folks would like to visit non-Disney attractions while in the Orlando area. A-Rod was quickly drafted by the Seattle Mariners, becoming only the third 18 year old short stop since 1900! Unfortunately, his first season was cut short by 1994's major league baseball strike.

As a result, it wasn't until 1996 that5 Rodriguez really came into his own. In this season, he batted a very impressive .358, scoring 36 home runs and 123 RBIs, the highest average for any right hand batter in the AL since Joe Di Maggio. This was also the 3rd highest batting average for a short stop in any league - Rodriguez would finish out the season with the Major League's highest total of hits, runs, doubles and extra base hits, earning him the Major League Player of the Year title.

He would play with several more teams until in 2004 he signed with the New York Yankees. During his years with the Yankees, he would set more records of home runs; RBI's and win Most Valuable Player in 2005 and again in 2007. Despite all his accomplishments, A-Rod would begin to receive criticism for being unable to perform well in clutch situations, that is under extreme pressure. Fans and sport writers alike would criticize his abilities. Much of this he simply takes in stride and has been quoted as saying, "I could care less. In my career, I've been hearing it for a long time. It will never stop until you win five or six World Series in a row, and hit a Joe Carter home run. I've done a lot of special things in this game, and for none of that to be considered clutch, it's an injustice." Even before he was old enough to drive a car, it was obvious that Jack Nicklaus (also known as The Golden Bear) was destined to become a golf legend. At the age of 13, this son of a Columbus, Ohio pharmacist broke 70 while playing 18 holes.

As a junior player he won the Ohio Open in 1956 at sixteen years of age, the US Amateur twice (1959 and 1961), and an NCAA Championship in 1961. When Nicklaus played in the 1960 US Open he had a 282 and finished second behind golf great Arnold Palmer. He was also a part of and won the US Eisenhower Trophy with his team in 1960 with a four-round score of 269-this record still stands today.

Nicklaus was playing on the pro circuit by 1962, when he won his first US Open. Defeating Arnold Palmer in this tournament made him a household name overnight. He would win the Masters twice in the 1960's even though it would be 1970 before he would win his next US Open. He took nine more major titles in the 1970s, breaking the 13 title record held by Bobby Jones. His last major tournament can in 1986, when he was 46; the oldest player to win this tournament.

In 1990, Nicklaus joined the PGA Senior tour. He would win 10 tournaments on the tour by 1996. Eight of these were major tournament wins, no less. His last appearance in a major tournament would be in 2005. Since then, he has stayed active in the golf world - designing courses, holding his own PGA tournament (the Memorial Tournament) and writing both autobiographies and instructional books - on how to play his way, of course.

Like his long-time rival Arnold Palmer, Nicklaus came to prominence as golf was beginning to be a televised sport. He quickly became one of the highest paid players, earning a then unheard of $60,000 in 1962; a year he would also win Rookie of the Year. 1963 was an even better year for Palmer as he captured the PGA and Masters championships.

His records include one for lowest score in the last 36 holes (in the 1964 British Open) and his 1965 Masters winning tournament record of 271 (which stood until 1997 when until Tiger Woods hit 270).

Asked to describe himself and his career in a 1970 interview given shortly after the death of his father, Nicklaus remarked: "I was playing good golf, but it really wasn't that big a deal to me one way or the other. And then my father passed away and I sort of realized he had certainly lived his life through my golf game. I really hadn't probably given him the best of that. So I sort of got myself back to work. So 1970 was an emotional one for me from that standpoint-it was a big boost." This may be the case; Nicklaus was certainly a record setter - he was the first player to win all four major tournaments twice in the course of his career.

Nicklaus won his third PGA player of the year award in 1974 and became one of the first additions to the World Golf Hall of Fame. The following year, he took his fifth Masters and fourth PGA championship titles. He was named the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the year the same year. Unbelievable for anyone but the golden bear, he won his sixth Masters in 1986. In fact, Nicklaus shares the record for having won all major championship three times with Tiger Woods. For his record breaking achievements in the game and his support for the sport off of it, The Golden Bear will always be a legend to golf fans. The objective is to open the pores to restore the aroma that is waiting to be let loose. There are a couple of ways you can do this. One method is to very lightly sand the surface using a fine 200 grit sandpaper on a sanding block. Be very careful with the sanding though as you don?t want to end up with scratch marks. This is avoidable if you sand in the same direction as the grain. There are times though when the cedar is just too old for the sanding technique to work. Before going to all that work try sanding a discrete area to see what the end result will be like.

Another way of doing it is to rejuvenate the piece. You can do this with extracts like cedar and some cedar sprays.

You may want to try putting some good grade cedar chips in a nylon and tying it tightly. Place this at the bottom of your cedar chest. Although not as good as the actual odor from the chest it will still no doubt stir up so old memories. - 24585

How To Really Use The Basic Woodworking Ruler

For novice woodworkers there are a multitude of things to learn when first getting into the hobby or business whatever the case may be. One of the simpler tasks may seem like reading a ruler. We all had to do it when we went to school right? For some us though that was a while back and we may be a bit rusty when it comes to basic math. It really is not all that difficult and it doesn?t take long to figure out once you get past the panic stage. This is the stage when you go to look for the measurement your pattern calls for and its not specifically marked on the ruler.

Ok so let?s go step by step regarding the markings of the basic ruler: ' - is for the feet markings " - is for the inches

We are going to be dealing with the standard US ruler here. This means that the ruler is going to be divided into inches and feet. In some other Countries, you will be dealing with the metric system. In those cases when your pattern is in US measurements then you have to do conversions. If you are not adept at this there are many conversion charts that you can take advantage of online.

Getting back to the basic ruler it is divided into twelve inches, which equals one foot. Where the confusion can set in is when you are trying to break down the inches. Unfortunately, many patterns don?t call for even numbers such as 5 inches or 7 inches. The pattern may be for 5 ? inches or 7 ? inches.

If you look at the ruler between the longest line starting at number one going over to the next longest line is marked number two. The distance between 1 and 2 is one inch. In between these two numbers, you are going to see several small lines. A quick way to help you remember the markings is to know that the longer the mark the bigger the measurement as you see where the one and two are and so forth? Now if you look in between these two numbers you will see the longest line which is at the half way mark, so this is a half inch. The next longest line after the half inch one is the quarter inch. Then after the quarter inch follows the one eighth inch then the last or the very shortest is the one sixteenth. Some rulers will go beyond this breaking it down even further but that?s not the standard.

Now if you were to count all of the lines between the one and two you will find there are 16 lines. So if you have a pattern that called 8/16 inches then you could simply count over 8 lines. However, another way of saying the same thing is ? inch, which is the same as the 8/16. Now you simply have to look at the half-inch mark rather than doing all that counting.

The Secrets Of Reaction Wood For Woodworking

Many individual woodworkers even seasoned ones don?t really understand the term reaction wood. This is where a piece of wood has a flaw or imperfection in it but one cannot see it easily. Then what happens is when a thin strip is removed from this type of wood it warps or twist. Then it could also pinch the blade and you end up with burns in the wood caused by friction or the blade stalls.

The culprit of this is that the piece of wood you are working with as been cut from a tree that had a lean in it. If it happened to be one of the softwood trees that it came from than the reaction wood will be called compression wood because it comes from the lower side of the lean. You may notice that this type of wood is very dense. Additionally it will be hard and brittle.

With hardwood trees, the compression wood comes from the opposite of the softwood types. In this case, now the reaction wood takes place on the upper side on the lean. It is now called tension wood. You may notice with tension wood that you get a lot of shrinkage in the length and it will have that wooly surface appearance to it.

If at all possible you want to avoid buying the reaction woods. To begin with if it?s the hardwood then the density it going to give you a problem when you go to stain it. The stain will not take evenly. This will be noticeable when you put it with the other parts of your project.

Another problem with reaction wood is its weakness. It won?t accept a heavy load. Then also, when you go to put your nails or screws into it the wood is liable to crack or split easier. If you are using this type of wood for carving or getting it to take any type of shape you are going to find its not very cooperative. It will react adversely to moisture changes as well.

The difficult issue about this whole problem is how to be able to identify what is a piece of reaction wood. For the untrained eye, it?s almost impossible but there are a few common place things that you can look for that may be of some help.

If you take a close look at the piece of wood you are thinking of buying and you notice there is a sweep to it or it seems crooked then don?t buy it. Most likely it is reaction wood. If you are familiar with the type of wood, you are looking at and it seems out of character then use caution. If you find that the piece seems harder than usual or dense, it?s most likely reaction wood.

If you see that, the wood looks fuzzy or there are cracks that are pulling away from the board that?s another sign of the reaction wood.

Hopefully by knowing a little about reaction wood your tools aren?t going to get all the blame that comes with the mishaps of this type of inferior wood. - 24585

Gondwana is the ancient name of the huge land mass made up of Africa, Australia, India, Antarctica and South America. Over 100 million years ago the mass broke up to form the individual countries. Australia is one of these countries and is one of the driest continents in the world

Australia has 516 National Parks to explore. The parks cover an amazing 25 million hectares. That's actually only 3% of the total land mass of Australia!

Most of the parks are serviced by the local state government e.g. parks that are in NSW are looked after by the NSW government. There are some parks however that are seen to be very special and these are run by the Federal Government.

Most of the key travellers' routes are in a National Park. Your trip to Australia will therefore, more than likely, include a trip to one.

It is not my intention to tell you about all 516 parks but I will share with you which ones I think are the best.

Before I do though, understand how the National Parks operate. A National park can literally be a park but its more likely to be a larger area where wildlife and plant/tree species are special or sacred. It can also be sacred rock formations e.g. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is home to Ayers Rock. A national park can span for huge distances with the average visitor only touching a small corner of it. Others are more manageable and you can see much more.

Entrance to the parks is not usually free. You will be required to pay an entrance fee of around $10. They may charge this per person or per vehicle. For popular tourist haunts e.g. Ayers Rock, you can expect to pay more.

Camping in the National Parks

If you like the open air and don't mind roughing it a bit, then camping in one of Australia's National Parks can be a fabulous experience - the scenery is usually stunning. Rules in the campsites around campfires are very strict given the risk of bush fires. Facilities tend to be pretty basic though but you might find the odd one with a hot shower.

Don't expect that you can just turn up and camp. The places for camping are limited especially in the peak of summer and you will need a permit. You need to book well in advance. The government websites have search facilities allowing you to find out which park has camping facilities but remember you will need to search by state. If you are planning to go over Christmas then make sure you book well in advance (months.) The most popular sites, e.g. Freycinet National Park in Tasmania, actually run a ballot system with the lucky names being pulled out of a hat.

So which are the best National Parks to visit? To be honest, it is a very subjective view and it depends what you are looking for. Whichever you pick, they all have stunning scenery. I've only got room here for 3 but but there are lots more recommendations at the website below

Best for Coast and Beaches

Lord Howe Island has won international acclaim and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It's not hard to see why with its enchanting walks, forests, mountains, beaches and marine life. The best walks are the Valley of the Shadows and Mount Gower. The first takes you through high forests of Kentia Palms and Banyan trees. The second is a well known day walk to the top of Mount Gower and its known to be one of the best walks in Australia.

Best for Rock Formations

Uluru Kata Tjuta is probably the most visited National Park in Australia given its the home of Ayers Rock. This is a world Heritage listed site for its culture and natural values. It is the heart of the red centre and a very spiritual place indeed. Clearly its about visiting the rock, either at sunset or sunrise (when the rock is at its very best due to the light that is cast upon it.) There are special viewing platforms where you can park up and enjoy the views. Get there early though as the best positions go quickly. The sunrise and sunset dinners are also worth going to but not both. Just pick one. The park itself is split into two " Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta, where the Olgas are. I personal thought the Olgas were more impressive than the rock so a visit to both is highly recommended. There is a great Cultural Centre that you should visit first. This will inform you of all the walks and when the guided ones are available. Theres often some Aboriginals here too selling locally made products. The most popular walk is the Base walk which takes in the entire base of the rock which is about 9km in total. It says to leave approx 4 hours but you can do it much more quickly than that and still have time to take photographs. Some get to the rock and insist on climbing it. First, if its a hot day, they close the climb. More importantly, you just shouldnt make the climb given its totally against the local aboriginals culture and beliefs. Its also extremely steep and apart from a small iron rope to hold onto, there is nothing. Its very dangerous.

The Grampians National Park is one of Victoria's largest parks and has great walks, scenery and wildlife. Its 260km from Melbourne along the Western or Glenelg highways (takes about 3.5 hours) The Grampians are a series of sandstone ridges with steep slopes and are very picturesque. The most spectacular waterfall is Mackenzie Falls. You can also see good Aboriginal rock art at Billimina and Wab Manja. There are a couple of 2 day walks for the serious walkers amongst you. But for the best view of the park head to Mount Abrupt. Access to the park is at Halls Gap. But if you want to escape the tourists head to Wartook Valley, e.g. Mt Zero and Mt Stapylton. For the really adventurous go for Mount Difficult which is hard going but amazing. Stony Creek Track to the Bundaleer passing Stony Peak is another good one. You can ascend the Wall of China to obtain the vast views to Tower Hill and the picturesque Victoria Valley. - 24585

Provence France is a Province in France that is bordered by the Rhone River on the west. The river forms a natural frontier with its neighbor Languedoc. Sneaky Snakes

Snakes. Just the mention of the word can send chills up the spine or send one fleeing in the opposite direction. To some they are just scary, slithery, sinister serpents. However, they are also sneaky. Yes, sneaky. The serpent has been known for its sneakiness since the beginning. Remember Eve? It was because of the sneaky sales pitch of the serpent that Eve "bought", Adam "bit" , and they were both "booted out" of the Garden of Eden. Oh yes, snakes can be extremely sneaky, and can show their craftiness in a variety of ways.

The American Copperhead is a great example of a cunning culprit. This snake has a rust and copper colored body with dark crisscrossing bands. It has a bright copper colored head, hence the name, Copperhead. This snake is easily recognizable, that is if you see it. Because of the snake's markings, they are easily hidden. Let this snake curl up on a pile of fallen leaves and you may never even know it was there. Pretty slick huh? But that's not all. These snakes learn how to be masters of guile at a very early age, as a matter of fact from the moment they are born. The baby Copperhead is born with a yellow tipped tail which it uses to lure unsuspecting prey. The juvenile snake hides beneath the leaves and sticks its wiggling tail up. The tail, resembling a grubworm, attracts moles, mice, and other such rodents. When the small mixed-up mammals take the bait, the clever Copperhead enjoys his dinner.

Besides being deceitful for dinner, snakes also use their misleading mannerisms to protect themselves. The colorful yet, allusive Coral Snake, for instance, will curl up and hide its head underneath its body when it feels threatened. Then it bends and presents its tail in such a way that it looks just like the snake's head. When a predator attempts to attack, the snake bites back injecting neurotoxic venom paralyzing its victim. The predator in this case sometimes becomes the prey.

Will the bird binoculars you choose work well with eyeglasses? Some are better than others for eye relief and eyeglasses. With good binoculars you sometimes feel like you are looking with your own eyes only the view is closer, magnified and clear. You hardly notice the weight in your hands while you are watching some curious little warbler in the brush. How big do you want that image to be? Well, that will depend on many things. How heavy will the binoculars be with extra magnification? Can you hold the binoculars steady if they are magnified more than 10 times (10x)? I find it hard to hold 12x steady for any length of time without support. But I have small hands and that makes a difference too.

So tell me, how much of the area can you see around the bird? That is your field of view. Field of view refers to how much you will see through the binoculars in relation to a fixed distance from the object you are observing. It will be helpful to have a wider field of view to be able to find small birds in the brush and across wide expanses of ocean or desert terrain. In addition to weight and magnification and comfort in the field, you want to keep in mind how much you can see. What is the field of view for those binoculars?

Bulky binoculars are harder to handle. Your hands will tremble while you are viewing the object. You may need a tripod stand to view birds without shaking with a bigger objective lens. You should select your own binoculars, especially if you have any vision impairments.

Let's clear up what those numbers mean. If your binoculars are labeled 10x42, it means you will be seeing things magnified ten times. The first number is the magnification, 10x. The size of the objective lens is described in millimeters in the second number. So in this case the diameter of the lens at the other end of the eyepiece is 42mm wide. A larger diameter lens is not only heavier, but it lets in more light and you can see things more clearly in less light than with a smaller lens.

The very next most important characteristic for me is whether the binoculars are waterproof binoculars and durable and sturdy. Or when they are dropped from the edge of an overlook onto the rocks below? Of course, if you wear your strap around your neck all the time they are less likely to fall, but, just in case, are they sturdy? I have lost a lot of lens covers at overlooks. I also prefer compact binoculars.

If you choose the best binoculars that fit you that also fit your budget and you will be a happy birdwatcher and even have some cash in your pocket for lunch, maybe. Just relax and look around. The binoculars you buy are intended to enhance your field trips or birding expeditions, so don't stress out over them. Take your time and read some reviews. Remembering Old Shea Stadium

As sad as it is, it's time to say goodbye to the old Shea Stadium after 44 years of sports memories for all of us. It hardly seems possible that the Mets were an expansion team all these years after their cross-town American League rivals first took the field. It's also hard to remember the stadium being called the Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium, but that's what it called until a movement was launched to name it in honor of William Shea.

Over the years, Shea Stadium housed some of the greatness baseball players ever to walk on the field. Names like Duke Snider, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Richie Ashburn, and Gary Carter who all became Hall of Famers. Then we can't forget the entertaining players that just gritted it out everyday like Lenny "Nails" Dykstra and Gil Hodges.

Yes, there have been lots of good times and a few bad times; we've been confronted with ugly and outrageous behavior of players and fans, but in the end we have some awesome memories woven into the fabric of the stadium's history. Take the 1986 Mets versus Boston Red Sox World Series game, for example, where we watched Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry take the Mets to a victorious climax, winning the World Series that year. Regrettably, the notoriety and high living took its toll as both players spent the remaining years of their baseball careers dealing with the consequences of drug use and other problems.

In 1969 we saw the Amazin' Mets win their first Championship when no one really knew of the young Nolan Ryan who would spend the next 27 years earning the record of the player who struck out 5,714 batters. Remarkable moments like these abound throughout the history of Shea Stadium; in fact, one could literally write a book about the colorful and extraordinary events. And although a new chapter in the stadium's history begins, those special memories of the past will live in the hearts of Mets' fans around the world for eternity.

When the world was stunned by the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Shea Stadium became a relief center for supplies, food, and a place for the victims to stay. Who can forget the first game after that fateful day when the Mets helped to heal the city? For New Yorkers, it was one of the most inspiring nights ever in baseball history. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to watch as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Before the game started the rescue workers were honored and Diana Ross sang God Bless America. It was a very moving experience as the two teams shook hands, united in the face of the tragedy that shook the world. Yes, our Shea Stadium is like no other. There is a debate among sports fans which is as old as professional sports: whether collegiate athletics or professional sports are superior to the other. Collegiate basketball has an amazing thing working in its advantage, the March Madness tournament. It's a fantastic time of the year when anything is possible. Teams that are outmatched and unheard of can get it together for one night and beat an established power. Dozens and dozens of games are held in a short amount of time, meaning there is jam packed action. There is of course ample room for betting, which adds to people's interest in the event.

Proponents of college basketball also mention how it is more pure. Some players have pro aspirations, sure, but most are just college athletes who have already maxed out their potential. Therefore they are playing because they love the game, not just for money or prestige. Their passion is easily seen, as is the passion of the fans of each and every team. A loyalty to college teams exists in stronger fashion than for many pro teams.

On the other side of the equation, fans of pro basketball will argue that while that is great, the NBA is better. The quality of competition is much better and the basketball played is better. The athletes are more supreme and gifted, and it's the best of the best. There are no weak links in the NBA, and the top players and teams don't get to walk over weaker competition that doesn't belong.

The seven game series which make up the NBA playoffs are pointed to by fans as a way of guaranteeing that the best team will emerge victorious. While it's hard to claim that the NBA playoffs offer more excitement than March Madness, they also make the point that regular season games are more compelling events.

When college vs. NBA football is the subject, the playoffs are invariably the center of discussion. NBA fans will make the argument that the college Bowl series uses a deeply flawed system where the teams aren't actually able to prove themselves in competition. The course of the college football playoffs are largely determined by computer analysis and voting rather than the direct competition of the NFL playoffs. Unless they are ranked number one or two by this odd system, even the best college team has no chance of making it to a Bowl game.

Fans of college football make the counterargument that the structure of the Bowl games series makes the regular college season incredibly exciting, since a team can lose its shot at the championship with just one lost game. Since there is a lot riding on the outcome of each and every game, fans remain engaged an excited throughout the entire regular season.

Each side in this long running debate is unlikely to change any minds on the other side and this is one place where fans simply have to agree to disagree - though many fans find a lot of enjoyment in the discussion itself. How To Refinish a Butcher Block Top Quickly

Most often we move into a new house and find a built in butcher block top. At first, it looks great but on closer inspection, it doesn't look so good. Butcher blocks aren't something new on the market or even old fashion like from the 70?s. They go back hundreds of years. At that time, the favored wood was maple or various other types of hardwood. In today?s building of the butcher blocks, they are quite often made from imported hardwoods, which gives a bit more of a variety. It must be remember that years ago there wasn?t the equipment for slicing meat that we have today. Back in the good old days, it was a lot of arm work and a good cleaver that was used to cut the meats. So needless to say why a butcher block was in order.

In our modern kitchens today, we are far gentler with our butcher-block tops and in most cases, we opt to use a cutting board and leave the butcher block top for esthetic purposes.

You can restore your butcher block if is showing the worst for wear and tear. The first thing you need to do is sand it down. This will remove the other varnish and urethane that probably has begun to chip anyway. It depends on just how bad the condition of the butcher block is to determine the sanding techniques. If it?s very bad then start with an 80 grit sandpaper. Then each time you sand it reduce the grits. This mean each application of sanding is being used with finer sandpapers. The purpose of this is the heavy grit removes the gouges out of the wood but the finer sandpaper removes the scratches made from the previous sandpapers. It actually turns out to be a process of elimination.

One thing you need to remember though when you are sanding out all these gouges the top is going to become uneven with a lot of dips in it. The best thing is to leave some of the deeper gouges. Besides, it adds character to it.

Once you have your butcher block back in condition you need to treat it. Don?t use the urethanes and varnishes that are used on regular furniture. Instead use a good finish of food grade mineral oil. Don?t us your regular cooking oils because they spoil and leave a bad taste on the food. All you do is with the mineral oil is wipe it onto the surface of the butcher block and you will see it rapidly soak in. Keep doing this until the wood has become saturated then remove the excess. Ideally, this should be done one a month. Then ideally, to finish it off perfectly a good coat of beeswax is in order. The food grade mineral oil soaked into the wood but the beeswax will sit on top and give it added protection. It retards moisture and bacteria from getting into the wood surface.

The one thing you want to avoid is having your butcher block becoming too wet. They are made from wood so naturally the moisture is going to eventually break it down. If it becomes too moist the wood swells then the butcher block begins to swell then as it dries out it begins to crack. The same effects can occur from the wood drying out too much as well. - 24585

Dont you just love bizarre sandwiches? You dont have to actually make them or even eat them at all, but for some reason its kind of nice to know that there are those who like such things! I mean, ever heard of a "St. Paul", which is apparently only available in St. Louis, Missouri, and only then in certain old-timey Chinese restaurants? Its a hunk of egg foo young on white bread with lettuce, tomato, and mayo " sometimes even a slice of American cheese! Or the chow mein sandwich, which apparently is a common menu item on Route 195 in southern Massachusetts " and not confined to Chinese restaurants! Others report having peanut butter-and-onion sandwiches, peanut butter-and-pickle sandwiches, or peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches with crushed potato chipsthere is no end to the variety of bizarre sandwiches out there!

Included in the list might be one of the most bizarre, the "Avraham Karadi" sandwich (A.K.A. Avi Karadi sandwich). It seems like it may have been created as a gourmet sandwich as it involves a tremendous amount of time and effort to gather and prepare the ingredients. I simply could not see anyone actually enjoying the resulting sandwich, but that's just me as there has been talk that it is popular in some locations. Here is the list of ingredients:

Passum, an ancient Roman sweet wine sauce, made by boiling the must (that is, newly-pressed whole fruits, including seeds, stems, and even leaves) and then adding honey to further thicken it.

Garum, an ancient Roman salty fish sauce, approximated today by combining passum with a fish paste and oregano.

Pine nut sauce, also an ancient Roman standby, made by combining vinegar, pine nuts, and honey, with some pepper and lovage.

Finally, spinach, onions, along with lettuce and tomatoes as desired, with rye bread being the usual, though black Russian bread seems to be a distant second favorite. Egg paste, such as found in egg salad, is sometimes used as well. Pastrami or roast beef are favorite meats to use. There are a few variations on the recipe, but they all use most of these ingredients. Curiously enough, I could not find out where the nickname of this sandwich, the "Avraham Karadi" or "Avi Karadi" came from.

Step One: Making the Passum: Reduce a quart of grape juice to one tenth its starting volume. You can add honey for taste.

How many times have you started a project then discovered that the wood you require is just not wide enough. Perhaps you are making a tabletop for example. Well you can actually make your own board. It's not all that time consuming or that much trouble. Basically, what you are going to be doing is simply gluing some smaller boards together to make one large piece. That's the basics but there are a few things you need to keep in mind when doing this to be successful.

All wood has some degree of movement to it. It shrinks and swells depending on what it is exposed to. In some cases, you are better ahead to use plywood.

To make your own large board you need to take the smaller boards and being sure they are perpendicular to the board facing you need to glue the edges of each board. Clamp them together tightly so they will bond.

You may want to use a power tool that will plane a smooth surface such as jointer. This is done after you have cut your boards with your power saw. If you are using a good saw blade, the cut maybe smooth enough and you won?t need to plane the edges. If you don?t have a jointer try using a router with a straight-piloted bit.

To create the illusion of it being one piece of wood arrange the colors as close as you can together and alternate the grain patterns. When it comes to choice of wood, you can use most of the hard and softwoods provided they have been kiln dried. It?s less likely to warp. Make your panel a couple of inches bigger so you can trim. Try not to use warped lumber. You can clamp it into place but it will most probably eventually weaken and bow.

The type of glue you use is important and polyurethane glue does a good job but it?s a little more difficult to work with. You don?t want it too thick although it has to be able to seep from the joint to properly bond. Check the expiration date on your glue as well. Just use enough glue to cover both the adjoining pieces. Remove the excess glue with a putty knife after it firms up.

You must clamp firmly but not over clamp because if you do you will cause the wood to bow. Place your clamps on alternating sides to help prevent this.

You want to do a dry run or layout of the boards first to see that they are going to fit properly and you are happy with the way the colors and grain work. Then you can if there is a problem with any of the edges correct these before you start with the glue.

You can use dowels if you want to reinforce the joints but it?s really not a necessity using a good glue is all you really should need. To achieve an even stronger bond cut in a glue join along the edges. - 24585

Like all goldfish they can tolerate very cold water temperatures so they are ideal for ponds that dont freeze in winter.

The Black Moor Goldfish will prosper in a 25 gallon or larger tanks with a fine gravel or sand bottom and hardy plants, it is known as plant eater so it is recommended to use only hardy plants such as Echinodorus species, Microsorium and Anubias species. When we decorate its tank we should think of its sensitive and delicate eyes and protect them from sharp decoration. The Black Moor gets along with other fish in a coldwater community fish tank and if kept with other goldfish it will school with them. It is also easy to breed. Males are usually thinner then females. They may exhibit breeding spots on their heads and flanks during the spawning season. Gradually increase the temperature to 72 degrees F. Provide soft vegetation or a spawning mops, and excellent water quality. Recommended to remove parents once the eggs are layed, otherwise they will eat their own eggs. A mature pair may produce over 1,000 eggs which will hatch after 3-5 days. The fry are easy to feed on small live foods or on liquid fry foods available in any pet store.

The Ranchu goldfish is maybe the most expensive goldfish species. It is known as the "King" of the goldfish. The Ranchu Goldfish is very similar to the Lionhead Goldfish but unlike the Lionhead it has a magnificent short, round body and short fins with no dorsal fin. It also has an amazing pinched tail fin which is at 45 degrees, to its body. The Ranchu was created in china during the Meiji Period but it was the Japanese whom created the Ranchu's we know today. Ranchus known to be very friendly species and some fish keepers are able to pet their Ranchus and even to train them to do some tricks. The Ranchu Goldfish come in a variety of colors, gold/white, orange/red, orange/white, white/red and a calico. Ranchu is a highly prized and sought after goldfish especially in Japan but also in America and Europe.

The Ranchu Goldfish is fit for for ponds more then to fish tanks but if you provide him enough space it can be kept in fish tank. The Ranchu is best kept with other goldfish or large coldwater species due to the fact that it is coldwater fish so do not mix it with tropical fish as it requires a less temperature than tropical fish. Ranchu Goldfish are notoriously filthy, producing much waste, frequent water changes and good filtration system is essential. Born in Belfast in the 1945, in Northern Ireland George Ivan Morrison was an only child. His father George was a ship worker, and mother Violet a housewife, and a competent tap dancer and entertainer in her youth. Fortuitously, his father had acquired a large record collection during a trip to the United States and Van grew up listening to blues artists such as Ray Charles and Leadbelly who were to influence his style later in life.

A critically acclaimed singer and songwriter he is renowned for being stubborn, and often gives astounding live performances. The studio albums Astral Weeks and Moondance are frequently rated as being some of the best albums ever made.

When he was eleven, his father bought him his first acoustic guitar and learned a few basic chords from a teach yourself book and it was clear that he had an aptitude for music. Van started performing in the late 1950s having become competent on the harmonica, guitar, keyboards, and saxophone and has already honed his trade in a number of cover bands playing the latest tunes of the era.

His first band was known as "The Sputniks" after the Russian satellite and in 1958, the band started to play small venues with Morrison taking the lead with his bluesy rich voice and making organizing most of the arranging.

Morrison left school in 1960 with no qualifications. As a member of a working-class community, it was expected that he would get a regular full-time job, so after several short apprenticeship positions, he settled into a job as a window cleaner" later alluded to in his songs, "Cleaning Windows" and "Saint Dominic's Preview". However, he had been developing his musical interests from an early age and continued playing with the Monarchs part-time. Young Morrison also played with the Harry Mack Showband, the Great Eight, with his older workplace friend, Geordie Sproule whom he later named as one of his biggest influences.

He toured Europe for the first time with the International Monarchs at seventeen, with Morrison playing saxophone, guitar and harmonica, and bass and drums as required, touring clubs and Army bases in Scotland, England, and Germany, often playing five sets a night. The band cut a single, which was Morrison's first recording at Ariola Studios in Cologne. He played saxophone and it just crept in to the German charts.

In the mid-1960s he was the lead singer with Them and recorded the classic "Gloria", one of the favorites in his sets. When he returned to Belfast the group disbanded and he began his solo career.

While being managed by Bert Berns, Van Morrison released the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967. Warner Brothers bought out his contract shortly after due to the death of his manager. He recorded Astral Weeks in 1968 which was critically acclaimed, but sales were initially poor, although it has now grown to become an all-time classic. The album established him as a major recording artist, and throughout the 1970s he built his reputation. Van Morrison continues to tour, record and collaborate with other artists, producing albums and live performances that are well received, returning to live performances of Astral Weeks in 2008 and in to 2009.

Morrison has received much acclaim including six Grammy Awards, being inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and appearing on several "Greatest Artists" lists. - 24585

Most of the time, people in craft fairs would find it wonderful and simply mind boggling to hang around your booth or your table if you give out freebies in some form or another. Freebies come from the word "free" and by free, it means a no-contract or strings attached form of some deal. Nothing in this world is ever free, which is why the concept of freebies would always attract people no matter how trivial or small it may seem.

Free items do not need to be very expensive, very large, or very big. At the most, the freebie should be part of your products. For example, if you are into the wood works industry, perhaps a small statuette, or maybe a paperweight would be a suitable freebie for your booth.

Don't forget that you also need to have your name (or your company's name) in the product's face. At least, when they look back, they would know the company (or the person) that gave them that particular freebie. Perhaps try and recruit a friend as well through that form of advertisement.

Food industry freebies often come by with using samplers. These are small tidbits of food, usually served cocktail style and laid out in trays for the masses to take one and eat. There was a time when I liked to venture into craftsmaking; I am a woodworker, in particular. To me, there?s just something that can be had with the natural beauty of wood. Whenever my muse is around the corner, I find that I can cut, carve, or glue them to whatever shape my mind imagines.

Now back to my story. Up until a short time ago, I preferred the mundanely repetitive task of my job. But then the financial crisis arrived in force, and just as a precaution, I began exploring other ways of earning extra cash.

It was time to get a new sleeping bag. So off to the Internet I raced. After checking 2 or 3 weather reports, I searched for info on sleeping bags that were good down to around 45F. Of course, I ended up with information overload - everything from synthetic versus down filled, to size & color & length & shape & blah blah blah.

I ended up choosing a sleeping bag from Mountain Hardwear called Sunrise. Yes, sleeping bags have names! It cost about $200.00 and seemed to suit my needs. Of course, I didn't really think about temperature options then, I was comparing prices and looks. This sleeping bag was a pretty blue one that matched our new boat!

Needless to say, that night was c o l d !! We picked up the boat on a balmy 65 morning, and drove all day, ending up in the 1000 Islands near Brockville, Ontario that night. We should have picked up a clue that it was going to be cold when we found that all the docks were removed from the islands, but we just scoffed at the scared, cold-fearing tourists and enjoyed a late dinner all alone on an island.

Darkness came early and we knew we'd have an early start, so after a quick tour of the island to let our dog do his business, we made our beds in the aft cabin and were asleep by 10:00 p.m. A few hours after midnight, our dog woke me up and when my feet touched the floor, it felt like there was ice in the cabin!

Unfortunately for me, the bed was too small for 3, so I couldn't even enjoy the warmth of my dog next to me. I quickly dove back into my sleeping bag, but it was too late. My feet were already numb and they didn't seem to warm up all night.

After a long and miserable sleep, we woke early and dressed quickly. We heard on the radio that the temperature had dropped to 25 degrees overnight! I discovered the hard way that there is nothing worse than being cold on a boat. And weather forecasts are often wrong! Is Hockey Still A Major Sport?

Hockey was once one of the four major American sports. The big four were the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. But yet, even as some in those group dominate the others (the NFL dominates all sports in terms of popularity), the NHL has not been able to really keep up with the others.

In fact, hockey is not truly considered to be in that big four grouping any longer. Of course, a more accurate description of the sports climate might show that NASCAR and MMA have joined the NFL, NBA and MLB in that top tier. Hockey however is on the outside looking in, no longer enjoying the popularity it once did.

How did this happen to the NHL? Was it the entire season that was lost to the lockout that did this? No, that wasn't the reason, that lost year to the lockout was actually a symptom of the problem itself. The lockout was held because salaries were getting out of control and many franchises, outside of the most popular ones such as the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings, simply could not afford to keep paying as much to their players as they were.

They weren't making enough revenue to pull it off. Revenue is brought in for sports teams through several areas, the most important of which are television rights and ticket sales. As the popularity of the sport waned, these sources of income did as well. Therefore the lockout was a result of the problem, not the cause of the problem.

The lockout however certainly didn't help the situation. When hockey returned the next season they made a deal with the network known as OLN - now Versus - to broadcast their weekly national games. However that cable station reaches only a small fraction of the homes that the major networks reach. This means that hockey simply isn't viewable by a great deal of the population, leaving it in a spot where it can hardly increase its popularity.

There is also the problem that many fans think that hockey is a sport which doesn't lend itself well to the medium of television. Fans prefer to watch hockey games in person; and NHL games are often sold out. However, hockey fans think that some of the speed and the finesse of the sport are lacking in televised games. Sadly, this has led to hockey being harder and harder to watch at all and there are a lot of people who may never know just what they're missing.

Therefore the answer to the question is that no, hockey is no longer one of the major sports in this country. It has lost it's place in that upper echelon, and is struggling for a strategy to get back. It needs to find a way to make its television games more exciting, while also getting those games aired in a spot where more people can view them. I was reading an article the other day talking about television networks and their advertising revenues when I came across this interesting fact. The 2 most popular outdoor sports are not football, baseball, or soccer, and obviously it's not basketball, either since those events are held mainly indoors.

They keep statistics on how many people go to these events and how many people are directly involved and then they plug it into some formula to rank popularity. Remember we are talking about sports that are strictly outdoors.

The first one of the 2 most popular outdoor activities or sports watching birds. That is right - birdwatching. Birdwatching as a sport is a little like bass fishing tournaments, humans are competing with nature, not teams against teams. Birding is similar to fishing as a sport because there are bird spotting and bird identification competitions just as there are fishing tournaments. Although the monetary scale for prizes is no where near that of Bass Fishing!

I want to mention about the expenses involved in this sport is that many birders invest in a quality pair of bird binoculars and buy birding guides to get the most out of their birdwatching trips. If you are going to do serious fishing, you will spend about the same amount. Birding is such a low-cost hobby or sport that you would be stunned to learn how many people are birdwatching these days.

New New York Yankee Stadium

Spring 2009 is just around the corner and Yankee fans will be able to visit the new Yankee Stadium. Of course, it will be a little while before fans warm to the new stadium - these are indeed some big shoes to fill. Yankee Stadium has seen a lot of history come and go in the South Bronx over its 86 years; but the new Yankee Stadium will replace something great with something even greater; the new $1.3 million stadium promises to be a worthy addition to the team and to the city of New York.

Since 1980, the idea of a new Yankee Stadium has been kicked around. Originally, the owner wanted to move the stadium given the state of the South Bronx at the time. As ideas were brought up, discussed and discarded, the neighborhood turned around and the team gained in popularity. By the early 1990s, the Yankees organization were still interested in building a new stadium - but right there in the Bronx.

The largest hurdle faced by the Yankees organization in building a new stadium was finances. Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was in favor of the city supporting new stadiums for both the Yankees and Mets with $800 million in construction funds and a $390 million investment in improved public transportation. The Mets would also receive $80,000 in the form of debt forgiveness and along with the Yankees, would receive $25 million in funds for planning and logistics. Giuliani's plan also included a waiver on sales and property taxes for both teams, as well as low cost, state subsidized electricity. Both teams would also receive 96% of ticket sales and 100% of parking fees for the new stadiums and other revenues.

The plan also waived sales and property taxes on the teams, would have provided both stadiums with state subsidized low cost electricity and allowed the teams to keep 100% of parking and other revenue brought in by the stadiums, with the city receiving a mere 4% of the ticket sales. Things looked a little less rosy for New York's ball clubs when current Mayor Michael Bloomberg too office. Mayor Bloomberg decided to exercise the escape clause provided for in the contract - however, the contract also included a provision allowing the teams to leave the city should the escape clause be used! Happily, the city and the two teams came to a new agreement and planning for new Yankees and Mets stadiums kept moving along.

A lot of care has gone into the design of the new Yankee Stadium. Built of Indiana limestone which will circle the entire facility, the park will look quite a bit like the old stadium did prior to 1974 renovations. A replica of the copper frieze which was present on the former stadium will be featured. While the new park will look much like its predecessor on the outside, the interior will feature a number of new amenities for fans, including two new restaurants which will be open all year.

Whether you are a fan of the new Yankee Stadium or fear that a vital piece of Bronx history will be lost, it can be agreed upon that the new home of the Yankees will be one which preserves the character of the old while offering the comfort of the new. The construction of the first Yankee Stadium was a risk taken by the team; one which paid off for the team and the city - and it looks like history just might repeat itself in the Bronx next spring. - 24585
